Save Us From A GMO World: Crops, Salmon, Mosquitoes What’s Next?

Do you know you’ve been eating? If you eat prepared foods or processed foods there’s at least a 90% chance you’ve been consuming GM foods. GM foods in our grains, fruit, vegetables and meats, without labeling to warn us of their presence. The fact is that no one knows what the repercussions of eating these Frankenfoods are. Some scientists believe that eating GM foods could give you cancer. One such leading expert in tissue diseases, Dr. Stanley Ewen a consultant histopathologist in Scotland says the cauliflower virus used in GM foods could increase the risk of stomach and colon cancers. Could there be a correlation between the increasing amount of cancer cases and GM foods? Besides the injection of viruses into our food everything about GM foods is unnatural. On what occasion would a tomato and a fish mate?

Colin O’Neil, is a regulatory policy analyst for the Center for Food Safety. He said that is "reckless for the FDA to approve genetically engineered salmon given the large number of environmental, human health, animal welfare and economic risks that have been raised by scientists, members of Congress and members of the FDA’s own Advisory Committee."

Yet the USDA has given half a million dollars of taxpayer’s money to a company called AquaBounty to promote GM salmon. AquaBounty’s salmon is supposed to be sterile but it has been shown that this frankenfish are not always sterile as claimed and could spread their genes into the wild population. Although there has been overwhelming opposition to these fake fish and to GM foods in general the FDA doesn’t seem to care what the public wants. The FDA has not even thought to warn us through labeling of what is going on our plates.

AquaBounty claims to have launched a "blue revolution," bringing together biological sciences and molecular technology; their next endeavors will be trout, tilapia, shrimp and lobster. Who in their right mind would to eat these Franken creatures? As one food economics expert put it, "It would take a worldwide famine to get people with more than a grade school education to willingly eat any animals or fish concocted in a laboratory. They would have to be starving."

Another scary twist is the creation of GM mosquitoes. In an effort to eradicate dengue fever in the Florida Keys the FKMCD is seeking federal and state approval to release hundreds of thousand of genetically modified mosquitoes. These mosquitoes have been created with an added gene. Unless the mosquitoes are given the antibiotic, tetracycline they will die. If these mosquitoes mate with the wild variety they will pass on this gene. The hope is to reduce the mosquito population but scientists have no idea what will happen to our natural ecosystem.

The majorities of mosquitoes are male and do not bite humans but some are also female. What are the human health risks of being bitten by a GM mosquito? Once again, nobody knows. Oxitec, the company that created these GM Frankenbugs has not conducted any long-term research on their safety with other living creatures.

Why should this bother you? Well, mosquitoes play a critical role in the food chain. They help pollinate our crops and other animals eat them. What will happen as more and more plants and creatures become something freakishly unnatural? Is man unleashing new diseases and more incidences of cancer?

If you find this information to be distressing then you won’t like what I have to tell you. It seems, GM mosquitoes have already introduced to our environment. Secretly, GM mosquitoes have been released in the Cayman Islands and Malaysia. They were released without approval and without the public being notified until a year later that they were participating in a ecological experiment. Yeah, it’s not only our government that does these kinds of things.

The most troubling thing about all of this is the reason behind GM foods and how little public safety means to our world leaders. They initially said that GM foods were being created to curb world hunger with GM crops. It has been shown that GM crops do not make a sufficient difference in crop yield. Coupled with the massive doses of pesticides and herbicides, GM companies such as Monsanto deem necessary, our natural environment hasn’t much of a chance. Is it any wonder why the bees are losing their way and dying? But whoever said the government was going to protect anybody anyway? The genie is already out of the bottle folks. Things can get consistently worse as more GM animals are allowed to be.

The only protection is to choose 100% organic, avoid all processed foods and choose 100% grass fed cattle and pigs. Remember if the animals you consume eat GM, you are eating it too. If at all possible, grow your own food and cook meals from scratch. Check the 5-digit label numbers on fruits and vegetables. If the number begins with an 8, it’s GM. If the 5-digit number begins with a 9, it’s organic.

This is a very informative hub, and this issue needs constant reminders from different angles. It is very easy to overlook the persistent issue of genetic modification since so many of us struggle to stay afloat with our daily lives. It's very scary to know that people, scientists, corporations, and politicians would rather consume themselves and their time with altering the self-sufficient aspects of the environment instead of fulfilling their basic human responsibilities to other humans and the earth. Real success and real leadership is in feeding the world in a minute, living respectfully with others, and helping to restore the natural balance in all aspects of society, not in destroying everything that is sacredly natural. The more reminders and new information on the subject, the better. Thank you very much.
